Al Haditha district located at the foothills of the Hajar Mountains in Al Hamraa state, Al Dakhiliya region. In the background are diverse buildings including modern houses and the more traditional homes. In the foreground is an older Omani woman walking and wearing traditional colorful garments including an embroidered dress, elaborately embroidered trousers underneath called “Sirwal” and a long flowing scarf on top of her head covering or “hijab” as is traditionally worn by the people of the Dakhiliyah (interior) region. The construction of houses in Al Hamraa state depend mostly on the natural resources such as clay, hay, rocks, palm trunks or fronds and wood from local trees called “Sidr” trees (Cidre trees) or “Alalan trees” (Juniperus Excelsa). The houses in Al Hamraa are considered unique within Oman due to the type of clay used (Al Madar) which provided the ability to construct up to three stories buildings.
