A palm farmer is watering the trees using the “Aflaj” irrigation network. Palm trees have a special technique for watering where a circular mound of earth is raised around it to create a pool of water around the tree trunk called “Al Gelba”. This pool remains visible for weeks after watering. Palms have specific seasons and times of day for watering and each farm had its designated timings to draw water from the shared irrigation network. The timing allocated to each farmer depends on the number of mounds created which is called “Athar”. Each of these would be allocated half an hour of water from the collective supply.
