In this photograph we see the newly emerged modern houses alongside the traditional clay houses. Before the renaissance in 1970, it was rare to find a building that was constructed using cement and iron reinforcement. The construction of houses in Al Hamraa state depend mostly on the natural resources such as clay, hay, rocks, palm trunks or fronds and wood from local trees called “Sidr” trees (Cidre trees) or “Alalan trees” (Juniperus Excelsa). The houses in Al Hamraa are considered unique within Oman due to the type of clay used (Al Madar) which provided the ability to construct up to three story buildings.
